Virology

Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers (VHF) are severe and life-threatening viral diseases that have been reported in parts of Africa, South America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. VHFs are of particular public health importance because they can spread within a hospital setting, they have a high case-fatality rate, they are difficult to recognise and detect rapidly, and there is no effective treatment.

If at any time VHF or any virus (illustrated in the table below) is suspected in a patient in hospital, it is essential to follow the guidelines illustrated in the Infection Control guidelines.

The CCDC and Duty Infection Doctor must be notified at once so the appropriate action can be taken.

Please do not send patient samples querying any Category 4 organism until the request has been discussed with the Consultant Virologist.
