We are a team of biomedical scientists and support staff that perform a range of tests to diagnose and monitor diseases of the blood and bone marrow.
The department is accredited by United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) in accordance with internationally recognised medical laboratories standards, ISO 15189:2012 Medical Laboratories – Requirements for Quality and Competence.
All of our Biomedical Scientists are registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). We are compliant with the requirements for quality and competence in medical laboratories according to Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA) UK.
The department is also approved by the Institute of Biomedical Scientists (IBMS) as a training laboratory. We excel in the training of Biomedical Scientists and support staff to not only gain qualifications but more importantly, achieve their potential.
We receive blood samples for testing from various locations, including but not limited to acute hospital wards, oncology, specialist haematology, cardiology, surgical specialties, paediatrics, clinics and outpatients departments, general practice, community nursing and other hospital trusts.
The department is one of largest standalone haematology services in the country, running up to 600,000 full blood counts per year. Staff work between Haematology, Coagulation, and Blood Transfusion.
