The Paediatric High Dependency Unit cares for children who require a higher level of care than is available on the wards. The unit has 4 beds and cares for children and young people aged 0-16 years.
Referrals and Discharges
Children are admitted to the unit from:
- Accident and Emergency
- Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Paediatric Assessment Unit
- Paediatric wards
- Operating theatre (following an operation)
Each nurse cares for a maximum of 2 children at once. When their condition improves the children and babies are transferred to the paediatric wards.
Investigations and Treatments
The children and babies admitted may require medical or surgical care and are often under the care of a number of specialties.
