At the Humberside Breast Screening Service, we run a number of services for ladies who have mobility difficulties and for those who need a little extra time during their appointments.

Physical disabilities and mobility problems

Breast screening involves standing very still for short periods of time. In order to position you correctly in the machine, you will need to be able to move your shoulders and arms freely. If you are attending an appointment at one of our mobile units, you will need to be able to climb steep steps.

If you think you, or someone you care for, might struggle with any of these tasks please contact the screening office on 01482 622300 to see how we can help you.

We run extended clinics for ladies who struggle with their mobility, where we can spend more time ensuring that you are comfortable throughout your visit.

In some cases we are also able to use specialised positioning techniques to ensure that the whole breast is seen clearly despite mobility difficulties.

Learning disabilities and learning difficulties

Deciding whether or not to attend for breast screening can be a difficult choice for many women.

The Humberside Breast Screening Service is committed to providing additional services for ladies who need extra support and their carers. We aim to provide an easily accessible service in a calm and positive environment.

We can provide information and support to assist with best interest decisions on a one-to-one basis. We provide breast awareness training for ladies and their carers, enabling them to feel more confident noticing changes in themselves / the people they care for. We can also offer individual pre-visits to our units in order that ladies can meet the staff and see the equipment before they come for their screening appointment. Ladies who need additional support from us will be offered an extended screening appointment slot, allowing us plenty of time to make the clinic visit as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

If you’d like to learn more about the services we can offer you or someone you care for, please contact us either by email to breast.screening@hey.nhs.uk or by telephone on 01482 622300.
