Useful Information following Oesophageal Dilatation

What can I eat and drink?

A soft diet is advised until the following day.

Are there any after effects of the procedure?

Sedation can impair your reflexes and judgement and can take 24 hours to wear off, even if you feel wide awake. For this reason you need to have someone who can look after you when you go home.

Please do not:

•  Drive a motorcar or any other vehicle
• Operate machinery or home appliances
• Have a bath unsupervised
• Look after children on your own.
• Go to work
• Sign any legal documents
• Take sleeping tablets or recreational drugs
• Drink any alcohol

What if I feel unwell after the test?

You may find that you suffer from the following after your procedure, they should settle over the next few days:

• Your swallowing may not feel to be improved or may feel worse for 2 – 3 days. This is due to the swelling of the tissue.
• Sore throat
• Streaks of blood in your saliva

Any severe pain in your neck, chest or abdomen must be reported immediately.

Outside of these hours please ring Ward 100 at Hull Royal Infirmary on (01482) 675100, your own doctor or Emergency Department.  Please do not hesitate to contact us if there is anything you are worried about after the test.

The full results of your examination will be discussed at your next outpatient appointment.
