In many cases, doctors will be able to issue relatives with a medical certificate, indicating the cause of death, which should be collected from the bereavement service. To arrange collection, please telephone the bereavement service on the day following death, or for deaths occurring during the weekend, please telephone on the next working day.

We try to ensure that medical certificates are completed as soon as possible, but in some cases this can take a number of days, as it depends on the doctor’s availability and the requirement to make a referral to the Coroner. We aim to keep you updated throughout the process.

For deaths that occur in Hull, the registrar’s office is based in council offices at The Wilson Centre.

For deaths that occur in the East Riding of Yorkshire, there are register offices in Cottingham, Beverley, Bridlington, Withernsea, Hornsea, Pocklington, Hedon and Goole.

An appointment to see a registrar is required and can be arranged through the bereavement service. We will also be able to advise of any paperwork required for registration.
