The following can be assessed and treated at minor injuries units and NHS walk-in centres, for patients over 18 months of age:
- ankle, hand, wrist, knee, and elbow injuries
- animal and insect bites
- burns and scalds
- cuts including those needing stitching
- eye complaints
- minor head injuries
Why not A&E?
Accident and Emergency is to assess and treat serious illnesses and injuries. Less severe injuries can be treated in minor injuries units and NHS walk-in centres, with no need for an appointment. If you need treatment for a child under 18 months of age please see your GP, Out of Hours or A&E.
In exceptional circumstances, for example, at times of particularly high demand, or where minor injury unit staff are unable to provide the appropriate treatment, patients may be asked to attend the hospital’s emergency department.
