The Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Library and Knowledge Services (LKS) provide a service to all employees within the Hull and East Yorkshire NHS. Library and Knowledge Services provide training, education, access and advice for all your knowledge needs. Whether you’re a member of staff looking to improve your service, a clinician looking for the best evidence to provide patient care, or a student on placement, LKS should be your first port of call for the best available evidence and resources.

Libraries at both sites house a number of internet enabled PCs, and friendly staff are usually available between 8am and 4pm during the week to support and guide you to the information or resource you need. Please feel free to email the service at hyp-tr.knowledge.services@nhs.net

24-Hour Access

You can access the libraries outside of office hours by purchasing a swipe card. The card costs £10, of which £5 is a deposit. Please contact hyp-tr.knowledge.services@nhs.net for more details and to check eligibility.

Members of the library are entitled to borrow up to 10 items at any one time, and can renew them twice. Items are issued for 4 weeks. Online renewals are possible through the library catalogue remotely (library username and password required).

Self-issue terminals are available at both sites. A growing collection of ebooks is available via EBL (Ebook Library). You can request access to a collection comprising 30,000 using your NHS OpenAthens credentials — contact hyp-tr.knowledge.services@nhs.net for more details.

Reserving Items

Please feel free to reserve an item if it is out on loan or if it is located at another site. You will need to check the library catalogue and you will need your library username and password. To reserve an item, look up the details on the library catalogue: http://heynhs.soutron.net/Library/Catalogues/Search.aspx and use the various options on screen or ask a member of the library staff to help.

Items that are not held by the libraries may be available via the other providers. Please contact hyp-tr.knowledge.services@nhs.net for further details.

Photocopying

The libraries provide self-service photocopiers, which enable you to make black and white copies and colour copies.

You can photocopy most material held in the libraries provided you abide by copyright law.

Please enquire at the library to request a photocopy card — you will need to have credit in order to print.

Double sided copies are registered and charged as two individual copies.

  • A4 B&W copies charged @ 10p per page
  • A3 B&W copies charged @ 20p per page
  • A4 Colour copies charged @ 35p per page
  • A3 Colour copies charged @ 70p per page

Document Delivery / Inter Library Loans

Should you require a book or journal article that LKS do not hold, we can usually order a copy for you. LKS charge £1 per item ordered; there are no limits to the number of items that LKS can order for you, we just ask that you pay in advance upon submission of a completed and signed copyright declaration form:

Get in touch with hyp-tr.knowledge.services@nhs.net if you would like to know more.

Searching for literature

You may need some help searching the healthcare databases to find the evidence you need. LKS can train you to use the databases yourself, or why not make use of our mediated literature search service? We will conduct a search on your behalf.

We have helped with drawing up guidelines for the ICU at Castle Hill Hospital. Below are a few examples of searches we have helped with recently:

  • 7 day working service in the NHS
  • ARFI elastography versus transient elastography for the evaluation of liver fibrosis
  • Bilateral perifoveal telangiectasia OR Macular telangiectasia OR MacTel OR Perifoveal tenangiectasia OR Retinal Telangiectasis OR Idiopathic juxtafoveolar retinal telangiectasis
