Emergency Medicine

Emergency Department (ED) is the front door to the hospital seeing around 130,000 patients a year with numerous and complex needs. Acute medicine accepts GP and ambulatory admissions. The vast majority of patients who are admitted to Hull Royal come through the ground floor; this offers the opportunity if not to recruit eligible patients, but to refer to appropriate specialties.

Patients attending with acute or chronic confusion or trauma often lack the ability to consent to life saving interventions so our staff are specifically trained to deal with such complications furthering advancements in treatment.

Our current research interests include

  • Emergency and acute medical conditions (severe bleeding, embolus and haemorrhagic episodes)
  • Trauma and orthopaedics
  • Brain injuries
  • Biomarker studies
  • Research in those lacking mental capacity
  • Cross-cutting and liaison with other specialties
