The Department of Academic Neurology has been involved in many research projects including original scientific research, commercial and NIHR portfolio studies. Our main interest is in Chronic Migraine and Cluster Headache and have published more than 50 original articles and reviews in peer reviewed journals. The cluster headache project was to explore ways to improve diagnosis and has been part of the PhD thesis by Dr Alina Buture. We have been involved in more than 30 clinical trials on new treatments in migraine and cluster headaches over the last 23 years. We pioneered OnabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) treatment in chronic migraine, currently a standard NHS funded treatment. We are one of the centres of excellence in headache research and care in the UK and organise the biggest headache meeting in the country every other year since 2005 where we invite national and international experts in the country to share their experience and deliver teaching to local physicians in primary and secondary care and the general public. The national headache society, British Association for the Study of Headache (BASH) operates from our centre and we have strong links with International Headache Society, Migraine Trust, Headache UK in outlining our services to an international standard. In addition to headache trials we are one of the centres for Multiple Sclerosis port-folio studies. Our research team includes:
