The Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Team are based in the Brocklehurst Building at Hull Royal Infirmary. We conduct a number of Clinical Trials which cover a wide range of Endocrine conditions, including Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Growth Hormone Deficiency. We also run Clinical Trials focusing on weight management.
In Academic Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism over the past year, our patients participating in research have had access to new and innovative treatments including new continuous glucose monitoring devices not yet widely available, which assist the patient in identifying patterns in their glucose levels and spotting hypo’s before they happen. Our research patients have also had access to new drugs as part of pharmaceutical clinical trials including a once weekly injection to treat their diabetes as well as many other newly emerging drugs. We are also heavily involved in obesity research aimed at prevention to progression of Type 2 Diabetes and reducing cardiovascular risk. In fact, the diabetes research unit in Hull is the centre of choice in the North of England for many pharmaceutical companies when it comes to trials of new drugs, moreover, often acting as a lead site in the UK. This gives local patients the opportunity to access the latest treatments ahead of general population.
We also seek to improve and evaluate service provision and patient experience. We are currently working with young adults with type 1 Diabetes to evaluate their experiences of transitioning from child to adult services and will make recommendations based on the results.
These opportunities along with the substantial investment in the new Allam Diabetes Building to open early 2021 means there has never been a better time to participate in research. Without new treatments and innovations we will never avoid the often dangerous complications associated with Diabetes and Obesity. By taking part in a clinical trial, you are working with researchers to move treatments forward and may get access to the latest treatments ahead of time.
