Pre-Mashed Diet (Texture D)

This leaflet has been produced to give you general information about the food textures recommended by your Speech and Language Therapist (SLT).  Most of your questions should have been answered by this leaflet.  It is not intended to replace the discussion between you and your SLT, but may act as a starting point for discussion.   If after reading it you have any concerns or require further explanation, please discuss this with your SLT.

Why do I need to eat pre-mashed foods?

A Speech and Language Therapist will have assessed your swallowing.  As a result of their assessment they have recommended pre-mashed foods.

What are pre-mashed foods?

  • Food that is soft, tender and moist
  • It has been mashed up with a fork before serving
  • Meat should be pureed or finely minced (pieces approximately 2mms)
  • Requires very little chewing
  • Any fluid, gravy, sauce or custard in or on the food is very thick (the fluid holds its shape on a plate or when scooped). It can not be poured and does not ‘spread out’ if spilled

Here are some examples of suitable foods; it is not a definitive list:





√ Porridge

√Weetabix soaked in milk

√Hot oat cereal

X Any other cereals


√Flaky white fish in sauce

√Tinned salmon/tuna with mayonnaise

√Fish cakes/ fish pie (no crispy/crunchy coating/topping, no added vegetables i.e. fish bottom, mashed potato topping only)

X Fish with bones

X Fried with a hard/crunchy outer coating


√Any meat pureed

√Finely minced (pieces approximately 2mms


√Cottage/Shepherd’s pie (made with pureed meat, no crunchy topping and no added vegetables i.e. pureed meat bottom and mashed potato topping only)

√Very finely chopped meat in gravy or sauce

√Mashed Corned beef


X Any meat that has not been pureed/ minced


√Scrambled X Poached, boiled

X Omelette with ham/ vegetables



√Any pasta meals that have been pureed


X Any pasta that has not been



√Rice pudding


X Macaroni cheese

X Baked beans/spaghetti


X No bread or sandwiches


√Mashed potatoes or well cooked boiled potatoes

√Mashed vegetables (those that mash easily) e.g. carrots, broccoli, swede, parsnips, turnips etc

√Cheesy mashed potato

X Any other potatoes

X Peas, beans, cabbage, leeks (even if mashed as they are stringy/have husks)

X Lettuce and other salad items

X Un-mashed vegetables



√Mashed banana

√Stewed/pureed fruit and custard

√Mashed avocado

√Fruit smoothies



X Tinned fruit

X Any other fresh fruit than those detailed in the ‘suitable’ list



√Ice-cream (not suitable if you have been recommended to have thickened fluids)




√Mousse and rice pudding

√Crème caramel

√Semolina pudding

√Fromage Frais

√Mashed sponge with custard

XBiscuits and cookies

X Flaky pastries

X Fruit crumble

X Chocolate


√Cream cheese

√Cottage cheese

X All other cheeses


√Tomato (without bits)

Dietary Advice

You may be referred to a dietitian if your overall food intake is poor; you have reduced appetite or have lost weight.  The dietitian will be able to give you tailored information and advice about your diet and meal ideas.
