Introduction

This leaflet has been produced to give you general information about the Hypnobirthing service provided by Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are delighted to offer Hypnobirthing classes to expectant parents. We teach KG Hypnobirthing, which is a simple and gentle package of training and education in pregnancy. Childbirth can be a powerful and positive experience that you treasure for the rest of your life. Hypnobirthing can help you to achieve this.

Most of your questions should be answered by this leaflet.  If you require more information please use the contact details located at the end of this leaflet.

What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is a package of antenatal education that will help to prepare you for your birth. It teaches you a variety of skills and knowledge that you can draw upon to help you to have the best birth for you and your baby, allowing you to welcome your baby with a sense of calmness and confidence. You will be taught how to understand your pregnancy, birth and parenting options and the implications of the choices that you make, so that you feel in control of your experiences in pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.

Fear and anxiety can alter the hormones your body will naturally release in labour.  This can delay and slow your labour, whilst increasing your experience of pain.  By practising the hypnobirthing techniques during pregnancy, you will release fears and anxieties, and build confidence in yourself and your body’s ability to give birth. Free from fear, your body can work efficiently, allowing the release of your own natural pain relief, feel good hormones and labour hormones so that your birth can unfold more naturally, smoothly and be a more comfortable, calm and positive experience.  Hypnobirthing can reduce your need for pain relief and shorten your labour.

What techniques will I learn?

  • Breathing exercises
  • Deep relaxations
  • Visualisations
  • Confidence-building and fear-release techniques
  • Comforting massage
  • How the birth partner can be your support
  • How your body is designed to give birth with efficiency and comfort
  • Detailed knowledge and information about pregnancy and birth
  • A simple practice regime to support you at home
  • Understanding how the mind and body work together

What are the benefits of Hypnobirthing?

There are only a few studies into the effectiveness of hypnobirthing; however the studies that have taken place and birth reports from women have shown that hypnobirthing can help you to have:

  • a more comfortable and sometimes pain free birth
  • a calm and serene environment for baby to arrive in
  • less need for pain relieving drugs
  • a more supportive birth partner, who has a central and active role in the birth

Studies about hypnobirthing have not found any negative effects for mothers or babies.

How is Hypnobirthing taught?

Sessions are taught over two Saturday’s based at the Women and Children’s Hospital to groups of around seven expectant couples.  The course costs £150 per couple. We recommend that you try to come with a birth partner where possible.

You will receive a parent information folder, a relaxation mp3 and a hypnobirthing book to work through in addition to receiving around 12 hours of face to face education.  We are also able to provide on-going support if required.

We teach KG Hypnobirthing.  There are many different “brands” of hypnobirthing but KG Hypnobirthing is deemed by many to be the “gold standard” of hypnobirthing courses.  A qualified KG Hypnobirthing practitioner will deliver the sessions.  The Hypnobirthing practitioner will be a Midwife or Midwifery Assistant who works in the maternity services at Hull University Teaching Hospitals Trust, who has trained on a KG hypnobirthing course, which is the only hypnobirthing practitioner course approved by the Royal College of Midwives.

Is Hypnobirthing right for me?

Hypnobirthing is beneficial to all women, regardless of how you plan on giving birth to your baby. The techniques you will learn will be helpful in all situations, whether it is a natural birth at home, an induction of labour, or if birth is assisted with forceps, ventouse or caesarean birth. Hypnobirthing will help you remain calm regardless of the path your birth takes and can help you to feel in control of the decisions you make about your birth.

When should i start the Hypnobirthing course?

Ideally, the hypnobirthing course should be completed before you reach 37 weeks’ gestation, in order to give you enough time to practice the techniques you will learn before the birth of your baby.  There is no perfect time to start but we would suggest beginning the package of education between 28 to 32 weeks gestation.
