Our hospitals and grounds are smoke-free to support the best health of everyone who stays, visits or works here. Stopping smoking before admission or while in hospital is the best thing you can do to improve your health now and in the future.

Stopping smoking…

  • Reduces your risk of infection
  • Promotes faster wound healing and bone repair
  • Reduces problems relating to anaesthesia
  • Shortens your stay in hospital

When you arrive at hospital, you will be asked if you smoke. If so, your doctor or nurse will refer you to the hospital Tobacco Dependency Treatment Team, who will visit you on your ward within the next working day to support you stay smoke-free throughout your time in hospital with expert advice and medication.

In the meantime, your nurse or doctor will support you with nicotine replacement medication.

Many people decide to take the opportunity to stop smoking for good, and if so, the team will ensure you are supplied with nicotine replacement medication to take home and can refer you to your local stop smoking service for ongoing support.
