Continuity of Carer Teams

Following the National Maternity review – Better Births it is clear that models of care where women know the midwife who is caring for them throughout their pregnancy journey, have a positive impact on improving safety, clinical outcomes, as well as a better birth experience. This will also have an impact on reducing pre-term births, hospital admissions, and the need for intervention during labour. HUTH has developed 4 Continuity of Carer Teams and plans are to enable more women to access this model of care going forward.

The hospital currently runs four Continuity of Carer Teams. Ivy Team, Primrose Team, Willow Team and The Linnaea Team for Twin Pregnancies.

  • You will have a named midwife who will provide most of your care

  • The Ivy team members will try and meet you during your pregnancy
  • When you go into labour you will have care from your named midwife or another member of The Ivy Team
  • If you are booked for an elective caesarean section, an Ivy Team Midwife will care for you

You will have the same number of appointments covering the same information. The aim of the Ivy Team is to provide you with seamless care throughout the antenatal, labour and birth, as well as visiting you at home after the baby is born. Your named midwife and others in the Ivy Team will also provide antenatal education. To book a place contact your local children’s centre.

It is important for you to know that there may be a rare occasion that an appointment may be cancelled at short notice, due to the fact that the Ivy Team may be caring for another woman in labour. However the team will endeavour to make sure this does not happen.
